CHKD On Tour: A Free School-based Program for First Graders

CHKD staff members will visit your school to present a 30-40-minute program designed for first graders to demonstrate what to expect if they ever need to visit the emergency room or are admitted to the hospital. This program helps to reduce the fear and anxiety children may experience when visiting a medical facility.

The CHKD On Tour program introduces children to the hospital setting using fun and interactive activities that include a short video and medical play. The program reinforces that CHKD is a friendly place filled with professionals who want to help them get well. The program is typically presented for two classes at a time with a maximum of 55 students for each tour session. It can be presented two to four times during one tour day, depending on your first-grade enrollment.

Each student will be given a souvenir bag to take home and share with their parents.

To request our CHKD On Tour program for your first-grade students, call Sam Fabian at (757) 668-7402, email her at Sandra.Fabian@chkd.org, or fill out this request form.

Program availability is on a first-come, first-served basis and can be scheduled September through June.

High School Student Health, Medical and Career Education

In partnership with Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at ODU, high school students explore various medical and health related careers through lectures and medical simulations (laparoscopic surgery, sutures, transferring a patient, ultrasound, pathology, etc.).

Speakers Bureau – As available, CHKD medical staff visit local high schools to provide career education in their respective field ( surgeons, dieticians, OT/PT/SLP, Child Life, Pediatrician, Neurologist, RN, NP, etc.) and health experiences and information.

Annual School Healthcare Professional Conference and Nursing In-service Trainings

The School Healthcare conference is open to all school personnel to include school nurses, counselors, clinicians, teachers, administrators, parents, and community healthcare agencies. This conference provides networking opportunities, community resource tables and sessions addressing physical, mental and social health, and wellbeing of students. The conference is held annually in January or early February.

CHKD provides medical experts to provide in-service trainings on diabetes, asthma, allergies, and other health topics requested from local city school divisions.
