Reach Out and Read

The Reach Out and Read program was introduced to the CHKD NICU to increase language exposure in babies and help improve their neurodevelopment. When parents and caregivers share books and read aloud to their children, these simple, everyday interactions stimulate optimal patterns of brain development and strengthen parent- child relationships at a critical time in the baby's development. Shared reading routines can help reduce toxic stress and build resilience.

ROAR books and resources are free to all families. Babies will get a new book at admission, discharge, and every four weeks they spend in the NICU. Parents are encouraged to read, talk, and sing to their baby whenever they visit. Reach Out and Read is committed to supporting families in everyday moments to foster early brain development in their young children.
