Inpatient Care

CHKD's inpatient units are arranged in pods that provide greater patient and provider interaction. Our goal is always to provide the best possible care in a setting that encourages families to be comfortable. Learn more about our inpatient care units and your child's stay at CHKD.

High-Quality and Comprehensive Care

Your child comes into the care of a hospitalist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) either from a referring physician, your local emergency department, or the emergency medicine department at CHKD. Parents can rest assured that their child’s hospitalist will work with his or her primary care doctor to provide high-quality, comprehensive inpatient pediatric care.

Hospitalists are doctors who focus solely on the care of patients who have been admitted to the hospital. At CHKD, our hospitalists are pediatricians who have extensive experience managing a wide variety of pediatric conditions that can only be treated through inpatient care. They manage the care of hospitalized newborns, children, and adolescents who have been diagnosed with varying conditions. Their expertise allows them to easily navigate the hospital system to provide efficient treatment in a caring and family-centered way.

If your child must receive inpatient care at CHKD, his or her hospitalist may serve as a consultant to your child’s primary care doctor. The hospitalist will ensure continuity of care by providing the details of your child’s hospital admission to his or her primary care doctor.

Once your child is discharged, his or her doctor will receive a brief inpatient summary from the hospitalist department. This summary will help your child’s doctor prepare for follow-up care and includes contact information for easy access to additional details as needed.
