Referral Guidelines

Our team manages patients from birth through 18 years old. However, patients over the age of 18 may be seen in our adult congenital heart disease clinic. Fetal echocardiography and counseling is offered in our prenatal clinic.

Please review our referral guidelines below to help ensure that your child/patient receives the best possible care.

How can I refer my patient to CHKD's cardiology practice?
  • Urgent consultations (providers) call Doctors Direct at (757) 668-9999
  • Non-urgent referrals (providers) call (757) 668-7214
  • Faxes (providers) can be sent to (757) 668-8225
  • Scheduling (families) can be done by calling (757) 668-7214
When will my patient be able to obtain an appointment?

Your patient's estimated wait time for an appointment is approximately three (3) days, but could vary depending on location.

What work-up is needed prior to the first appointment?

Please send us a reason for the referral and any relevant office records. If a patient is being seen for hypertension, they must been seen by nephrology first. If a patient is being seen for hyperlipidemia, the patient should have fasting labs drawn prior to their appointment.

Where will my patient be seen?

Cardiology offices are located at CHKD (Norfolk), Oakbrooke (Chesapeake), Oyster Point (Newport News), Concert Drive (Virginia Beach), and Lightfoot (Williamsburg).
