Fostering Excellence Among Healthcare Professionals

The CME program fosters excellence in pediatric care through its diverse educational activities. Activities focus on prevention, treatment, diagnosis, emerging technologies and procedures in pediatrics, pharmacotherapy, and practice-related needs, and are designed to improve the pediatric knowledge, attitudes, and skills of physicians and healthcare professionals who care for children.

CME Event Schedule

Specific CME activities include, but are not limited to, single and multi-day conferences, community rounds and maternal newborn transport reviews. Most activities are presented in traditional lecture and case-based formats. However, the program encourages diverse presentation formats to achieve activity objectives.

Five for Fighting: Managing Ice Hockey Athletes

Date and Time: March 12, 2025, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This is a virtual event. No pre-registration is required

Speaker: Kyle Stimler, PT, DPT

Overview: This lecture will discuss sport-specific demands for an ice hockey athlete, including positional biomechanic demands, common injuries and rehabilitation considerations for overground training.

Objectives

  1. Describe common ice hockey injuries.
  2. Explain energy system demands in the ice hockey athlete.
  3. Compare position specific demands in the ice hockey athlete in return to play considerations.
  4. Develop overground rehabilitation considerations that translate into hockey performance.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Update

Overview: This professional educational conference is designed to provide emergency physicians, pediatricians, family practitioners and other healthcare providers with state-of-the-art evidence-based information in pediatric emergency medicine. The morning session will begin with the Annual Forrest White Visiting Lectureship presented by former CHKD/EVMS resident, Emily Sterrett, MD, MS. In the morning session, Dr. Sterrett will discuss educational and quality improvement strategies pertaining to acute pediatric airway management. The afternoon session will focus on community engagement to improve pediatric emergency medical preparedness.

Emergency medicine staff from Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters' Emergency Center will present a variety of topics pertinent to pediatric emergency care through lectures and case presentations.

Target Audience: This Pediatric Emergency Medicine Update has been organized to inform the pediatrician, family practitioner, and
emergency department physician. Residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to attend.

18th Annual Donald W. Lewis Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine Update for Primary Care 2025

June 12, 2025, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Purpose: The purpose of this educational activity is to provide the most up-to-date information and hands-on techniques for health care professionals taking care of young athletes. After attending this conference, healthcare professionals who are caring for young athletes will be able to evaluate, diagnose, and manage injuries in the pediatric and adolescent athlete as well as apply hands-on techniques for treatment of sports injuries. 

Target Audience: This program has been designed to educate primary care pediatricians, family practitioners, internists, emergency medicine physicians, sports medicine specialists, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, pediatric medical specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers and other interested health care providers.

Pediatric Grand Rounds are sponsored by the office of Continuing Medical Education, Eastern Virginia Medical School. Pediatric Grand Rounds are held weekly at Brickhouse Auditorium at CHKD and are attended by faculty, community faculty, house staff and medical residents and students.

Grand Rounds is telecast at the following locations:

CHKD's Health Center at Oyster Point, Eastern Shore, Peninsula Institute for Community Health, Inc., Portsmouth Community Health, Main Street Physicians and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Eastern Virginia Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. EVMS designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

After attending this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Define current diagnostic measures and treatment modalities for the high-risk mother, fetus, and neonate.
  2. Analyze outcome data on selected cases of patients referred from regional hospitals and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes.

MNTRs are open to physicians and staff with privileges at each respective hospital. The MNTR schedule is subject to change. Hospitals at which MNTRs are held are listed below for general reference.
