Personal Statement
Both my wife - Dr. Mariam Rahmani - and I are child psychiatrists and were drawn to CHKD because of their clear mission to provide high-quality care with compassion to children and families. CHKD’s new state-of-the-art Children’s Pavilion is a beacon of hope, and really shows that CHKD is dedicated to the mental health of young people and families, as well as the education of future child psychiatrists.
Bio
As a child psychiatrist, Dr. Shapiro prefers not to emphasize "where" he grew up, but "when." Although born in New York, Dr. Shapiro "grew up" at the University of Florida for college, medical school, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. To continue his growth, Dr. Shapiro finally took the plunge and moved away from his home of 22 years to start a new adventure at CHKD.
Outside of child psychiatry, Dr. Shapiro is an avid fan of traveling with his wife (also a child psychiatrist), sports, stand-up comedy, murder mysteries, and rock/alternative music (’90s is the best). As a child psychiatrist, Dr. Shapiro provides both psychotherapy and medication management, and in fact makes psychotherapy a core part of his clinical practice. Dr. Shapiro views children and adolescents as growing individuals, and not just a list of symptoms, and as a "puzzle piece" within the whole picture of a family. Dr. Shapiro uses individual and family therapy techniques to work with all the puzzle pieces to create a clearer picture.
