Personal Statement
I decided to join CHKD because my daughter struggled with respiratory issues and the staff was absolutely amazing with her and my family each and every time we came. This, for me, is my way of giving back to those who kept me sane during those trying times.
Bio
Brenda Montero is a licensed professional counselor with more than 15 years of experience in mental health.
She has worked with survivors of domestic violence at the YWCA of South Hampton Roads and at Fleet and Family Services at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. She's also provided therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and their families in residential settings.
She has experience in outpatient therapy, intensive in-home therapy, and coordination of care and residential services, and is fluent in English and Spanish.
Brenda grew up on Long Island, New York, and moved to Hampton Roads in 2003. After graduating from Old Dominion University, she worked for a residential facility for children and adolescents with severe mental health challenges.
She enjoys spending time with her daughter, going to the beach and other water-related activities, reading, her dogs, amusement parks, traveling, dancing, theater, coffee, and all things relating to snow.

Clinical Interests
I have found a passion for supporting and providing services to trauma survivors. I am looking to further my career by obtaining certifications in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT).
