Personal Statement
I am excited to transition from private practice to join the CHKD family. I know that working with children requires one to wear many hats, fulfilling the roles of equal parts physician, magician, cheerleader, mentor, coach, friend, and in my case, “Tooth Fairy.” I look forward to sharing my energy, compassion, and dedication to excellence in care with my patients and the CHKD team and to continue doing what I love: serving children and their families, promoting and educating others about oral health initiatives, and building relationships between and collaborating with care team providers and patients.
Bio
Dr. Anderson is a Hampton Roads local from Suffolk, Virginia and has called the Southeast home throughout her academic and professional career.
Dr. Anderson attended Wake Forest University where she earned her bachelor’s degree and graduated summa cum laude, majoring in health and exercise science and minoring in both biology and chemistry. During her time at Wake Forest, she held several leadership positions and service roles ranging from student athletics to campus ministry. She also completed an honors research program through her major exploring neural networks and eating behaviors and was inducted into several honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, the national leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key International Honor Society, and the premedical honor fraternity Alpha Epsilon Delta.
Upon completing her undergraduate studies, Dr. Anderson traveled back to Virginia to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry where she continued her love for serving others through local health and wellness programs. She also continued research interests through the department of orthodontics and served as a coordinator for the Mission of Mercy projects, a dental service initiative aimed to provide dental care to underserved populations throughout the state.
Dr. Anderson’s love for working with children and families as well as patients with special needs led her to pursue specialty training in pediatric dentistry. She completed her residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, earning her specialty certificate in pediatric dentistry. While at MUSC, Dr. Anderson served as chief resident and pursued research interests focused on nutritional counseling for the pediatric dental patient and the implications of pediatric obesity on children’s dental care during her training.
After completing her residency, Dr. Anderson returned to Virginia to reside and practice in the Norfolk area, providing dental care in private practice to pediatric patients in both clinical and hospital settings before joining CHKD. She has been recognized by Coastal Virginia Magazine as one of the area’s “Top Docs” and holds several professional affiliations with the American, Virginia, and Tidewater Dental Associations, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Outside the office, you can find Dr. Anderson either swimming, cycling, or running. She is a competitive Ironman triathlete and open water swimmer. She is a Boston Marathon qualifier, multi-time Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championship finisher, and a multi-time Ironman All-World Athlete, consistently ranking among the top elite amateur Ironman distance athletes in the world. Dr. Anderson serves as regional captain of her triathlon team and an ambassador for the cycling advocacy non-profit, Bike Law, as well as a few other outlets, platforms, and brands within the endurance sport community. She is a cat mom to three rescues, Freestyle, Watts, and Hoka (all appropriately named for her hobby) and an aunt to four amazing nephews. She is excited to be back “home” among family, friends, and colleagues, and to serve the community of Hampton Roads.
