As the only free-standing children's hospital in the commonwealth of Virginia, CHKD and everyone who works there are fully and totally dedicated to the health and well-being of every child that walks through our doors.

Bio

Michael J. Goretsky, M.D., FACS, FAAP, is a Board Certified Pediatric and General Surgeon. He specializes in pediatric general and thoracic surgery. He received his medical degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed a general surgery residency at University of Cincinnati and a pediatric surgery residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Dr. Goretsky spent 15 years at CHKD – home of the Nuss procedure, where he gained extensive experience in the repair of complex chest wall conditions and was active in clinical and research endeavors with a special interest in metal allergies of the Nuss bar. He has also been involved in resident and medical student education at EVMS and served as an admissions interviewer for the medical school. After a brief period at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Goretsky returned to CHKD at the end of 2017. His major clinical interests are chest wall disease, minimally invasive surgery and surgical quality. He has been published in many peer-reviewed journals on the Nuss procedure as well as a variety of pediatric surgery textbooks.

Dr. Goretsky has served in a variety of leadership roles including director of pediatric surgery education at EVMS and chair of the general surgery task force for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. He is a professor of surgery and pediatrics at EVMS and was named the surgeon champion for NSQIP at CHKD. He is the division Chief for Pediatric Surgery.
