Refer to Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks Program

Referral Guidelines

The Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks program at CHKD typically provides care for children with vascular anomalies from birth to age 21, but also treats adult patients with the condition.

Some of the conditions we treat include the following:

  • Hemangiomas
  • Port wine stains
  • Venous malformations
  • Lymphatic malformations ("cystic hygromas")
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)

Please review our referral guidelines below to help ensure that your child/patient receives the best possible care.

How can I refer my patient to the Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks Program?

Referring physicians can call Wendy Barnes, clinical coordinator for the Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks Program, at (757) 668-8684 or email her at Wendy.Barnes@CHKD.org. In-network referring providers may also refer a patient through Referral Management in PowerChart.

When will my patient be able to obtain an appointment?

The Vascular Team meets the second and third Friday of the month; your patient will be seen at the earliest appointment available.

What work-up is needed prior to the first appointment?

No pre-referral work-up is required for most conditions. The patient should bring any related imaging studies with results, office notes or other pertinent information. This information can also be faxed to (757) 668-8788. Please include the appointment date and time on the fax to ensure timely processing.

Which provider will see my patient at the first appointment?

The center’s core staff consists of specialists in pediatric plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, hematology, and dermatology. This multispecialty approach allows the best possible outcome.

Where will my patient be seen?

The hemangiomas and vascular birthmarks team meets twice a month in the ENT clinic at Fort Norfolk Plaza, 301 Riverview Ave., Suite 300, Norfolk.
