Junior Volunteer Program
Volunteer Opportunities
Each year, teenagers who turn 15 on or before June 1 and are still enrolled in high school can apply for the Junior Volunteer Summer Program. The online application and forms for new participants are available annually on March 1, and the application closes once the program reaches near capacity.
The program is divided into multiple sessions, each lasting two weeks. Volunteers should request a session that does not conflict with other summer plans, such as camps and vacations. Volunteers report to their volunteer assignment on weekdays, Monday through Thursday only during the session, and can choose a morning shift (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.) or an afternoon shift (1 – 4 p.m.). Please note: The summer program offers limited roles that involve patient contact, but the MAJORITY of volunteer opportunities are strictly office-based.
Assignments are available at the main hospital campus in downtown Norfolk as well as select CHKD health centers around Hampton Roads and on the peninsula. The program fills in the order of the interview process on a first-come, first-served basis. Service areas may include but are not limited to:
- Patient interactions (in the playroom and at the bedside)
- Staff support in various clinics and offices
- Gift shop
- Surgery waiting room
- Therapy Services
- Sports Medicine
Sessions
All sessions operate Monday through Thursday only (no Fridays, weekends, or holidays).
- Session 1: June 16 – June 26
- Session 2: June 30 – July 10
- Session 3: July 14 – July 24
- Session 4: July 28 – August 7
