Heart surgery program enters new era
CHKD's heart surgery program is now affiliated with Columbia University in New York - home to one of the nation's top cardiovascular surgery programs - through a formal arrangement and the addition of Columbia faculty member and full-time pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Christian L. Gilbert to the CHKD professional staff.
Dr. Gilbert says a variety of new services and procedures will be available for the first time at CHKD, including complex cardiac surgeries, like the Norwood procedure, to correct life-threatening congenital heart conditions.
"I'm thrilled we've been able to assemble a talented and dedicated cardiac surgery team to help bring the best possible care anywhere to the region's children and families," Dr. Gilbert said. "And we're delighted to work in concert with CHKD's department of cardiology to meet the full spectrum of pediatric care."
Dr. Gilbert comes to CHKD from Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis where he served as chief of pediatric cardiovascular surgery. A graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, he completed residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery and a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Joining him is cardiothoracic surgeon John Artrip who graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, and completed fellowships in electrophysiology and pacing, and cardiothoracic surgery at New York-Presbyterian Medical Center; thoracic surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, and congenital heart surgery at Denver Children's Hospital.
Cardiovascular anesthesiologist Jimmy Windsor rounds out the surgical team. A graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Windsor has completed fellowships in cardiac anesthesia and critical care at that institution.
Drs. Gilbert, Artrip and Windsor are all affiliated with Columbia and are employed through the Bon Secours Heart Institute.
