Around-the-Clock Medical Coverage

CHKD provides a multidisciplinary pediatric intensive care unit with 24-hour medical coverage.

A highly skilled pediatric transport team is available 24 hours a day to transport critically ill children to CHKD in specially equipped mobile intensive care units. If necessary, the Nightingale air ambulance is sent for emergency situations.

The critical care physicians are all board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. Multiple other pediatric medical and surgical specialists, pharmacists, lab technicians, radiologists, therapists, and dietitians are available 24 hours a day for consultation and patient support.

Emergency referrals and transport can be arranged by physicians with the CHKD pediatric intensive care unit at Doctors Direct, (757) 668-9999 or (800) 207-2022.

The specialized Neonatal/Pediatric Transport Team at CHKD provides service to all hospitals in southeastern Virginia. Our transport team uses specially designed mobile intensive care unit ambulances and aircraft for our missions.

Emergency Care

CHKD's Emergency Center is home to the first and only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Hampton Roads, offering the highest level of care available to trauma patients under the age of 15. Our comprehensive team of pediatric emergency medicine specialists are ready to care for the unique needs of children 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
